Texas Rangers scratch SP Max Scherzer (arm strain) from Friday's rehab start in Frisco
FRISCO – Texas Rangers Starter Max Scherzer's attempt at it return to rotation has hit another hurdle.
Scherzer, who has not played since leaving after four meetings in St on July 30 due to arm fatigue, was tentatively scheduled to make a rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Friday night, but the club has scratched those plans. Scherzer is not ready to begin a rehab, according to the Rangers.
Scherzer turned 40 on July 27, just days before his eighth start of the season. He missed the first three months of the year dealing with the recovery from offseason back surgery. His rehabilitation was further complicated by nerve problems in his shoulder/arm similar to Neurogenic Thoracic Dissection Syndrome. He was treated with Botox injections, which has become a popular treatment for the neurogenic version of the disorder.
He returned on June 23, then made four starts in a 17-day stretch from July 9-25before starting in St. During the start against the Cardinals, he complained of a velocity drop. Initially, the Rangers expected to simply lose a start, but things haven't improved in the linear way that Scherzer and the club had hoped.
Scherzer, second among all active players behind Justin Verlander with 216 career wins, is a free agent at the end of the season.
