Plano ISD Updates Code of Conduct, Student Expression Policy
Updates on Plano ISD's code of conduct refining acceptable expression were part of a series of recent changes approved by the board of trustees.
Resolutions approving changes in code of conduct and student expression at graduation ceremonies were endorsed by Plano ISD Board of Trustees IN August 6 meeting.
Overview
According to the board meeting DOCUMENTSthe main changes in the code of conduct were:
- Greater specification of harmful, derogatory and hateful language prohibited in schools and school-related activities and events
- Changes in the types of inappropriate clothing and behavior, such as clothing with harmful, derogatory and hateful language
- Other formatting changes throughout the document
Other changes to speech standards at graduation ceremonies were made to ensure consistency across all district events, according to the documents. One of the major changes included emphasizing that all graduation speeches must comply with all applicable state and federal laws, in addition to district policies and graduation guidelines.
All of the board-approved changes to the expression policies and code of conduct went into effect for the 2024-25 school year, which began Aug. 13.

The board of trustees is currently scheduled to hold a work session on August 20. The agenda for the meeting must be posted at least 72 hours before the start of the meeting.
