New Exergame Lab Opens at Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County
The innovative lab offers a mix of exercise and play to local youth in McKinney
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County (BGCCC) unveiled a state-of-the-art Exergame Lab at its McKinney Clubhouse. Funded by the McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC), the new facility combines physical activity with games to provide a unique and engaging fitness experience for youth in the community.
The Exergame Lab includes advanced technology that tracks athletic performance, movement and reaction time. This innovative approach to exercise, known as exergaming, aims to make exercise fun and accessible for kids by combining exercise with interactive games. The lab is designed to promote overall health and wellness among club members ages 6-18, encouraging increased physical activity and fostering social and cognitive growth.
According to Exergame Fitnessgamification has proven effective in increasing engagement, enhancing social skills and promoting cognitive growth. The Exergame Lab not only aims to improve fitness levels, but also seeks to teach children that technology can be a tool for promoting a healthy lifestyle.
“We are extremely grateful to the McKinney Community Development Corporation for their generous support in making this Exergame Lab a reality,” said Shawn Wills, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County. “This new space will provide our club members with a state-of-the-art environment where they can stay active, healthy and engaged through exercise and play.”
According to an official statement, the initiative also aligns with the broader mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County, which has been serving the needs of children in the area since 1968. The organization is dedicated to helping young people reach their potential their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.
MCDC, a longtime supporter of community initiatives in McKinney, sees the Exergame Lab as an important step forward in improving the quality of life for the city's youth. “The McKinney Club is a vital gathering space in our community,” said Angela Richardson-Woods, MCDC board chair. “The new Exergame Lab aligns directly with our strategic priorities and represents an important step forward in promoting physical activity and wellness among our young community members.”
