Collin County Animal Shelter faces tough choices due to overcrowding
Facing challenges due to overcrowding, the Collin County Animal Shelter is asking for help from residents.
Because of the problem at the shelter, five dogs were recently euthanized at Collin County Animal Services in McKinney.
“Shelters across the country are facing similar overcrowding issues and unfortunately, CCAS is no exception,” Animal Services Manager Lacy DeHorney said in an email.
What you need to know
DeHorney said that during animal intake evaluations, staff consider things like medical issues, animal behavior, length of potential stay, adoptability potential and space limitations.
Shelter staff aim to place the animals with forever families. DeHorney added that it's not an increase in intakes that is contributing to the overpopulation, but that dogs are staying longer due to low adoption rates.
“These are animals that they see and care for every day,” DeHorney said. “The staff's commitment to animal welfare is unwavering. Thankfully, the county has approved a bond for a shelter expansion project, and our leaders are committed to making this a priority. However, immediate action is needed from our community.”
What's next?
CCAS is urgently seeking adopters, foster carers and volunteers. DeHorney says the number of adoptions and fosters is very low, and rescue organizations are facing similar capacity issues.
“CCAS has many wonderful, loving and loyal dogs waiting for their forever homes,” DeHorney said. “Please consider adopting, fostering or volunteering your time. Every little bit helps.”
