Collin County among the longest life expectancies in Texas

Life expectancy rates in the United States have increased significantly over the past fifty years, increasing by nearly seven years. Several factors influence life expectancy, including genetics, alcohol and tobacco use, diet, body weight, and physical activity levels. But where you live also plays a critical role, as it affects access to health care, availability of healthy food options, and opportunities to maintain an active lifestyle.

According to 2024 county health rankings and guidelines from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, ranked by Stacker, Collin County is among the counties with the longest life expectancy in Texas.

In Collin County, life expectancy is approximately 81.6 years — 4.4 years longer than the state average — ranking third in the state.

Health outcomes indicate the average life expectancy within a community and the overall physical and mental health experienced by its residents. Collin County exceeds the Texas county average and exceeds the national average on these health outcomes.

In Collin County, Texas, only 12% of adults consider themselves to be in fair or poor health; 11% smoke regularly; 27% are considered obese; and 18% reported binge drinking. The state ranked significantly higher in each of these indicators.

According to the report, 92% of residents have opportunities for exercise. Collin County also scored 8.4 out of a possible 10 on the food environment index, which includes access to healthy foods and food insecurity. The average value across the country was 7.7.

However, deaths from alcohol-impaired driving were higher in the county. In Collin County, 29% of motor vehicle crash deaths involved alcohol, compared to a statewide average of 25%. In the US, 26% of motor vehicle accident deaths involved alcohol. The county also has fewer dentists, primary care physicians and mental health providers than the state average.

Above Collin County in the rankings was Concho County in second place, with a life expectancy of 81.7 years, 4.5 years higher than the state average. The county with the longest life expectancy is Presidio County with a life expectancy of 83.1 years, 5.9 years higher than the state average.
