Collin College to expand health care workforce training with $2 million grant


A $2 million grant will allow Collin College to expand its Plano campus to build health care learning facilities, according to a news release.

The grant, which will fund building infrastructure improvements, was awarded by US Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.

“Our students will benefit from this investment as it will equip us to expand our offerings and help our students achieve further success,” said Michelle Millen, dean of academic affairs in health sciences and emergency services. , in the announcement.

The funding award is expected to create 4,000 jobs as well as expand programming for “high-demand” health care professions, the release said. Collin College offers over 200 degrees and certificates in a variety of professions, including a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

The project will convert existing classroom space into health science laboratories that will provide students with hands-on training opportunities. The construction work will also include energy-efficient elements, according to the release.

“This expansion is not just about physical growth; is a testament to our commitment to nurturing the future of healthcare, expanding the horizons of healthcare education and ensuring our students receive the best resources while at Collin College,” said Millen.

The project will contribute to the organization's goal to improve its facilities and educational offerings, as well as an ongoing facility renovation initiative that began after the ice storms in 2021, the release said.

The funding of the grant comes from 2023 Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Actwhich allocated $483 million in relief funds to areas affected by major disaster declarations during 2021-2022 for natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires and floods, according to the release.
